Jump & Kiruv

Kiruv, or Jewish outreach, is a movement that brings non-Orthodox Jews closer to Judaism. It encourages them to believe in G-d, engage in Torah study and practice mitzvoth in the hope that they will live according to Orthodox Jewish law. Orthodox outreach workers and professionals include activists, rabbis, lay leaders and all kinds of organizations advancing the initiative of "Jewish outreach." Claude Bitton definitely fits the definition of a Kiruv activist and can surely be considered as one.

Claude Bitton, who was born in Morocco in 1948, is a devoted Jew. He believes in Kiruv and encourages young people to come closer to the Jewish religion. On several occasions Claude Bitton has invited people who have strayed away from Judaism to come to his home, participate in the Shabbat rituals and enjoy some good food and good wine in an effort to bring them closer to Judaism.

Another way Claude Bitton has contributed to Kiruv is by leasing his property at 7751 Yonge Street, Thornhill, Ontario to the JUMP organization. Claude Bitton could have leased this prime location property to any number of triple AAA businesses who wished to rent the space. However, Claude Bitton’s generosity, good will and desire to help the founder of JUMP, Rabbi Green, in promoting Kiruv among the younger Jewish community are the reasons he chose to lease the property to the rather new, not-for-profit organization known as JUMP.

JUMP, or Jewish Urban Meeting Place, officially opened its doors in October of 2007. Their centre, which is located on Claude Bitton’s property at 7751 Yonge St, Thornhill, Ontario, features a large lounge, boardroom, library, five workstations, fully equipped kitchen and a modular stage. Students and young professionals between the ages of 22 and 34 are encouraged to discover their Jewish identity by using the various facilities available at the centre. They are also encouraged to attend the various programs offered by the centre, including Hebrew language classes, cooking classes, Shabbat dinners and various socials.

JUMP celebrated its first anniversary on Saturday, January 31st, 2009 by hosting a party for 500 young professionals from across the GTA at the Steam Whistle Brewing in downtown Toronto. JUMP has welcomed approximately 1700 members during its first year in business. JUMP’s list of members continues to grow and emails/marketing materials reach out to approximately 6,000 recipients in Toronto. Claude Bitton’s belief in Kiruv and his willingness to lease his property at 7751 Yonge Street, Thornhill, Ontario to JUMP can surely be viewed as contributors to JUMP’s huge success.
